climate change projections Putting urban science to work (2/6)

Is science important for policy decision making in an urban context? What kind of science do today’s cities need? What are the best science-policy practices? This panel discussion, moderated by Monica Contestabile, Chief Editor of Nature Sustainability, explores the challenges and opportunities of building a stronger interface between policy and urban science. Monica is joined by Right Honourable Arron Wood, Deputy Lord Mayor for the City of Melbourne, Professor Xuemai Bai of Australian National University and Professor Michele Acuto from Melbourne University, who share their experience of bridging the science-policy interface in the development of sustainable cities. Topics discussed include specific science-informed projects and experiments in city planning that are underway in Melbourne; the role of global city peer networks like C40, 100 resilient cities or ICLEI; the importance of taking an integrated ecosystem approach to sustainable city development; and knowledge co-production between science, policy and community, as well as between the Global North and the Global South. The overarching message is that the best collaborations occur with full engagement between the scientific community, policymakers and community implementers and lead to actionable outcomes, and that now is a time of great potential for developing even more effective engagements and collaborations in the future.
